When you hear scary rumors about a food, supplement, vitamin or medicine, it's a good idea to check it out before you panic.  How?  Here's some resources.

Dr. Michael Gaziano, a heart specialist at Harvard, presented research recently at a Royal Society of Medicine Conference that shows the benefit of tea.   340 men and women were selected who had suffered heart attacks and matched by age, gender and neighborhood with those who had never had a on.    The study concluded that persons who drank one cup a day of black tea can had 44 percent less risk of having a heart attack!

Dennis Savaiano, dean of Purdue University's School of Consumer and Family Sciences suggests that persons who are lactose intolerant (not allergic) to milk products can overcome that problem by regularly drinking milk or eating a milk product in very small quantities, perhaps 1/4 to 1/2 cup, on top of a full meal.   Read the full report at Third Age.

According to a report in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, men who eat cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbages, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, kale, collards) can considerably cut their risk of getting prostate cancer.   In fact, according to a report on this study in Third Age, men who eat three servings a day cut their risk roughly in half!  Ex-president George Bush, you didn't do the men of America a favor when you dissed broccoli.

Is osteoporosis just a women's disease, or can men get it too?  According to Dr. Robert P. Heaney, professor of medicine at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, 20 percent of the 28 million Americans affected by this brittle bone disease are men.  "The threat of osteoporosis should be a very real concern for men," he writes.  "To meet calcium recommendations, men should consume the equivalent of at least three 8-oz glasses of milk a day.  Calcium fortified orange juice is another option."   See "Taking Care of Dem Bones" for more information.
