When the stadium was built, there were 16 royal palm trees planted directly outside of the outfield wall, around its perimeter. By the mid-1980's, this one near the right field foul pole was the only one left. 

Legend has it that former Brooklyn Dodgers slugger Duke Snider would use it as a target for homeruns.  It lived until 2001 when it was killed by the demolition process.  It has been referred to in newspapers and magazines as "The Lone Palm".  Also, a small bit of original neon tubing is still visible in the foul marker.
