Hi - How long would you recommend not drinking alcohol for after an acute attack of Pancretitis. I've been 4 years and two months and it was suggested five years by the hospital. I'd be very grateful if you could point me in the right direction.

Many thanks

I would say that depends at least partly in how long you've been without symptoms.  Also, if the pancreatitis was either brought on or made worse by heavy drinking, originally, you'd be better off never starting.

The only way you can know is to talk with your doctor, and if he says you can do so, drink very little and no too often, at first, and if no problem, keep it to one or possibly two in any 24 hr. period (one drink for women).

I would ask you why you would entertain the idea of drinking alcohol. The pancreas has a big job to do and you should seek to make it work without any difficulty. I had no knowledge that I had chronic pancreatitis. I ended up in the hospital for four months. My life has been changed for ever. I developed a large pseudo-cyst and had four surgeries to remove portions of the pancreas as it necrosed (died off). I am lucky to be alive with the additional complications of pneumonia, MRSA, a staph infection, medical food/water deprivation, drug induced coma, and a surgical hernia. The repair for the surgical hernia did not hold so I am in for more surgery. I am a Type I diabetic. You do not know what it is like to sit on the edge of the bed with a needle in your hand and poorly equipted to give yourself that first insulin shot ever..no practice. As I sit here I am having pain after having very little pain for a good long time. Some people have pain all the time. I am one of the lucky ones. So I am racking my brain to try to understand if I could have eaten anything that would have brought this strong pain back. My guess is green tea with caffeine. I was not told to avoid it but I see via the net that caffeine should be left out of my diet. So, no and no again do not drink. I can't say you will end up like me but why chance it? One drink will lead to two and everyone will place one in you hand. I was a tee totaler and yet I fell ill. I was not the only one who was in rehab. after pancreatitis. I did not ask them if they were drinkers but I know as you do that is the common problem for getting pancreatitis. Learning to walk all over again is not as easy as it sounds. Everything hurts and when you look down to see where your feet are you topple. Better you never topple. I care so I am brusk. Please, don't.
