Hello All
I have just been told that I have gallstones, all the symptoms of my illness fit with the pain to the right and just below the right rib, pain below the righhand side shoulder blade, discomfort that aslt form minutes to hours.
On 13th july Visited the A & E department of my local hospital due to the pain being extremly severe which i had never experienced before, i am awaiting treatment through my local GP but i would like to know how i can help my own situation through changing my diet.
I am a 44yr old male who is also a house husband, i have put weight on over the past few years and i am trying to address this situation also, i would appreciate any guidance that you would be able to provide, my four children were very worried due to dad being taken into hospital and i would prefer to avoid a repeat of this in the future whether i experience any further serious pain before or after tretment from my doctor.
I would be interested to learn of non-surgical treatments due to my partner recently going through a very big operation to remove her Thymus Gland due to the illness she suffers from (Myasthenia Gravis) i would like to aviod any further unplesant situation for my children to have to cope with,
Any Ideas,?????
Regards
Tom

I think most doctors would agree that the best solution is surgery; commonly a procedure is done called "buttonhole surgery" which is not a whole lot worse than having a wisdom tooth pulled, and the stay in the hospital is extremely brief.
Meanwhile, a very low-fat diet will help ward off attacks, and help you lose a little weight - even a very few pounds will make a difference in your eventual recovery. But it will not stop the gallstone problems.
There are two other approaches I've heard of. One is a drug which dissolves gallstones although it takes a while, and they tend to recur. Plus all drugs have side effects. Second, I've heard of a procedure with an endoscope where they remove gallstones, but again, they recur, and this procedure is rarely done, as I understand it. Third, they can be broken up with soundwaves but again,. this has it's own complications, and this procedure is rarely done.
If the gallstones are VERY small, exercise, lots of fluids if you have no problem with fluid buildup - and I mean water, juice, tea - not soft drinks. Plus a very low fat diet, including either peppermint tea or a drug from the Dr. to relax the bile duct MIGHT let them pass out with minimal discomfort. But rarely are gallstones that small.
Your kids will be more upset seeing you in pain, and the long term outlook is sometimes grim if you don't get the problem resolved. Better just get it over with.
For a fuller explanation see Dr. Weil - Getting Rid of Gallstones
A more controversial approach is Dr. Mercola's Regular Exercise May Prevent Gallstone Surgery
