Can you advise me on how to properly clean a natural bristle hair brush? Thank you.

As you may have guessed, nylon brushes are easy.  I just rake the comb through mine to remove the hair.  This tends to bend the bristles some but not as much as trying to get the brush through my long, extremely thick and difficult hair (hey, why do you think I've worn it in a bun all my adult life?).  I use degreaser, and sometimes even bleach on my stiff nylon brushes.  Once every few months I run all the hair, nail, bath and kitchen brushes through the dishwasher (on cool dry, top rack).  This probably isn't recommended procedure, but it works for me.

On the other hand, natural bristle brush are made of actual hair, and have to be treated like hair only better.  Your hair will grow out again if you damage it, but your hairbrush, obviously, will not.  First, don't remove hair by raking a comb through it.  This will break off some of the bristles eventually, and weaken others.  Use a "hairbrush cleaner", and remove hair regularly.  Leaving matted hair in a natural brush will eventually flatten the bristles.

Second, NEVER use bleach or any other harsh cleaners on a natural bristle brush, and never soak it.  Fill the lavatory or a basin with some warm water and add a little shampoo.  Swish the bristles in the water.  (If the brush has a composition back, you can submerse it.  If it's wood, try not to wet the wood more than necessary.)  Then rinse under running cold water.   Lay on a towel, bristles down, until naturally air dried.  Don't try to use it until it's entirely dry.

Note that use of a hair dryer with any brush will shorten its life.
