Well I appreciated all the advice here but I called GE service. The serviceman said the igniters were made to last only about 5 years. He was surprised that mine lasted 8 years! He said that the heat kills them so the more you self-clean, the more you cause the igniters to wear out. I expect my broiler igniter will be next. $78 part and $252 for the whole thing installed. Thanks!

I only have 3 problems with GE:  All their appliances suck, their customer service is useless, and their extra warranty plans are a rip-off.  Needless to say, we have stopped buying their crap, but we are stuck with a few items.

We bought a GE XL44 model# JGBP30GEP1 in 1992. We've replaced at least 3 ignitors since, the most recent 3/7/06 costing $155.00-and we stopped using the self-cleaning cycle thinking that would make the ignitor last longer.....Last night, neither the oven or the broiler would ignite....this morning the broiler works, the oven doesn't heat-hence, Ham steaks for Easter Dinner. Yes, GE customer service sucks! Learned that long ago~Thank you for posting your GE problems for this piece of junk because I've had ALL THE SAME PROBLEMS-noisy & "bangs" when it heats up, etc etc.. I intend to replace this piece of "poo poo" however, first I will give GE the free advertising it deserves by carting this LEMON in the back of my truck w/ a sign on it that says "GE SELLS LEMONS" for, oh, a month at least and maybe park it on my front lawn because it's oh so deserving of yard art and consumer awareness. Allow me, GE, to incorporate my sentiments into your local sales & advertisements so other consumers don't make the same mistakes I did. No wonder there's a 9 hour window for repairmen appointments-they're right out straight busy with  A MILLION OTHER JUNKS JUST LIKE MINE!! I had a Lady Kenmore dryer for 38 years~I have an antique Tappan stove still working in my basement!Never had a problem with that!My gratitude to this site and all those who posted similar experiences-AS I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER GE PRODUCT AGAIN!!! Gas isn't cheap but I'll drive to the Moon before I ever drop another dime into that company's corporate wallet!!!

I had a 50-year old gas range I replaced two years ago, a brand that no longer exists.  It only had two service calls in all the time I had it, and that was 1 oven thermostat and 1 adjustement to the burners when this area converted from tank gas to street gas.  I also had a 38 year old gas dryer, Whirlpool that I had to replace, and just replaced my 28 year old Whirlpool refrigerator, that still worked fine but in Florida's climate had produced rust at the the outside bottom that wouldn't let the door seal completely.   It never had a major repair of any kind.

I don't think I've ever had a GE appliance but I'd hesitate after these complaints and the brush-off I had the two times I tried to get a response for this forum. I suppose many appliances aren't made as well as they used to be in some ways, but the Sears mechanic says, although lighter in wieght, many are better and certainly more energy-efficient.

I'm hoping for the best when I have to replace my nearly 20-year old dishwasher that heats it's own water and has a garbage disposal.  But it won't be GE!!!

...."a brand that no longer exists"...probably an obsolete maker who's COMPETENCE surpasses that of GE; what a shame...!!!GE probably paid them to get out of the market... I am going to see if an older models can be converted (easily, because my relatives/friends do it for "past time/ etc") to gas) and if it's A HUNDRED YEAR OLD STOVE-I'LL SPEND THE $$$. They've lasted a hundred years- how bout a few more for "angry consumer":P....doesn't seem to be a problem since they've 'NO ELECTRONIC IGNITION' to keep the finance payments flowing for GE who's graciously sent most of their business abroad..:?..B'Bye GE! You'll last longer in my yard than you did in my kitchen-and I focus this on the BOILED EASTER HAM DINNER WHICH I AM COOKING NOW AT 4:44 PM EASTER SUNDAY 2007!!!

STICK IT GE!!! Your APPIANCES SUCK!!!:X

Personally, I am surprised at electronic igniters. I was all for them in ovens and gas water heaters; the kind that won't let the gas flow until the igniter heats up, or a manual sparker. As a child, I knew someone who was terribly burned when a gas oven blew up after turned on but not lit by mistake! My new water heater has a sparker, which is certainly more conventient to use than a match but an absolute b__tch to learn to use correctly!

But my Whirlpool gas countertop range surprised me considerably. The igniter (sparker) isn't a safety freature at all, but a "convenience". I can see why it's a better idea than pilot lighters using gas and polluting the atmosphere, but there's no safety involved. Frankly, after a family member leaving it clicking once, and a few times I thought it was lit and it wasn't, I think I'm going to unplug the electricity and light them with a welding sparker or something similar; at least I'll be able to see when they light!

I'm not surprised about the igniters. Our old, old dryer lost it's igniter the first two times we moved it. The third time I did it in all by myself, carelessly, while cleaning out lint. The first time my husband changed it, but the second, we had purchased a whole house repair policy from Sears, and the technician told me they were all very delicate; if jarred or poked, or even with time, they go out. I'm sure the same is true of ovens, especially with the self-cleaning function. But why do they all seem to be GE? Has anyone out there with an oven with electronic ignition of another brand, self-cleaning, had a problem??? Let us know.

In addition, if they are so delicate, why make them so hard to replace?

I'm SO glad I decided to search for "ge xl44" before I called the repair man! This forum solved the problem (same one everybody else is having). I went to my local parts store, bought an ignitor for $74, and installed it in about 15 minutes.

Thanks to everyone who posted here!!!!

When we bought our replacement igniter, the parts store offered a lifetime warranty for an extra $7. If I hadn't seen the posts here, we probably would not have taken that option. The store owner said he sells "alot" of them. This is just another example of anything that has electronics, and everything these days is electronic, something will go out!

Well......we got the ignitor locally for $74 :)(only to have found two later that day on Ebay for $35 plus modest shipping..:(.) We installed the ignitor and then the set pin on the burner bake broke... :X No one wants to solder it :?(however the repairman who did the original ignitor replacement broke it first....AND soldered it...:P) so we're now into this for another $35 for the burner bake which we had to order because no one keeps them in stock. I'm just loving General Electric more & more everyday!!! Will post the results if we don't explode upon installation!

thank you!!!

3 weeks ago, my ge xl44 stove (5 years old) failed in the same way described on this board.  I ordered the part from sears (~$90.00) and it was delivered in 3 days.  I followed lake lady's steps and 40 minutes later, my stove is working again!!! Thank you so much!!!  The only difference that I experienced in her directions was that I did not have to cut the 2 wires on the existing ignitor to free it from the stove.  I unplugged them from their connections.  Once the ingnitor was out, I cut them (giving me extra length on the wires), stripped them, connected the ends of the old wires with the existing connectors to the 2 wires on the new ignitor, twisted them with the provided ceramic connectors and plugged them back in.

Again, I cannot thank everyone enough!

Hello All

I just started having the same problem with my gas, self-cleaning Spectra XL44 as eveyone else:  top burners work, broiler works, display works but the oven won't heat up.  Can someone tell me if there is a specific part number for the igniter?  I got mine from Sears and the model # is SGBP28DED1WH

I really wish I had done some research before I bought my oven.  I have had this XL 44 just long enough for the warranty to run out and the oven quit.  I have read all the postings about the oven igniter but my broiler will not work either.  Does this mean I have to replace two igniters?  I can't believe a company as large as GE doesn't have better customer service!

Hello Everyone,

I have a new twist on this problem.  My oven works in the morning, it only refuses to warm up at night.  Can you believe that!  It takes about an hour for it to reach 300 degrees.  During the day, the oven will go to 375 in about 10 minutes.  Any advice?

Try the Repair Center to see if they have an answer.  To hazard a guess, I would say it was related to your thermostat.  Does it do the same thing no matter what the temperature?  I have an outside light that only functions when it's cool.  Had an electrician over and perversely, we couldn't make it malfuntion.  It's in the wiring as I have changed the whole light.  Not that the weather is really hot, it won't work at all!

The temperature does not seem to matter as much as the time of day.  This seems to be the only pattern we can detect with any consistancy.  It sounds really bizarre but thats what seems to be happening.  It does not want to work at night.  Thanks for the suggestion.

new message ...
I'm hoping one of the folks who successfully repaired this problem is still listening...my igniter is bad but I can't figure out how to remove the igniter from the burner bar without removing the burner bar also.  I don't see any easy way to remove the burner bar without LOTS of effort.  My unit is older than most of those being discussed (about 12 years) ... Am I missing something obvious ??

Well, hoping and researching are two very different things, but well worth the effort. I TOTALLY agree with the "poster" that says the old stuff is better . My Whirlpool washer and drier work great. BUT, the Kenmore sxs refridge has had to have the defrost element replaced twice in 5 years. This new element has a life time guarentee on it.  The GE stove from Sears also, is on its 3rd oven ignitor! I beleive it was a GE part, but I think Whirlpool makes a replacement ignitor that may last longer.  Whichever one is in there now ,I will get the other and "hope for the best!"   Check out forums like this before you buy. You will be glad you did,... maybe.  Good hunting.
