| I just moved into a fixer house. It has a range/oven that is named Caloric and looks a little old. I was cleaning it yesterday and the ignightor started clicking and wouldnt turn off. I called the gas company who said it wasnt dangerous and that I probably got some fluid/ water in the ignightor and it would keep clicking until it dried out. It stopped after about 3 hours. Then this morning it started again. I didnt get any fluid in there. I was cleaning the front of the oven/range. Now it won't stop. The knobs aren't turned on. Is this dangerous? Was the gas company right? What to do?

It wouldn't be fluid in the igniter; it would be fluid or a short in the control knob. The igniter only does what the contol tells it to do. Electricity is getting through even though the knob is turned to off. Unplug the electricity to the stove, then see if the control knob will slide off. If it's dirty underneath, or damp, clean it. DO NOT try to clean it with the electricity turned on. If you cannot clean it, and it doesn't dry itself out and stop the clicking, it's probably the control that's bad, not the igniter.
If it continues to click for quite a period of time, it will burn out the igniter. The gas company doesn't care because they can sell you a new stove, which you may or may not need anyway. They certainly shouldn't, in my opinion, have told you to let it keep clicking. That's useless.
PS: I am not a stove mechanic, only have a general idea and experience in how things work. If anyone has more informed information, please add it.

| Thanks. That makes sense. I had taken the control knobs off to clean them and was wiping down the front. Some fluid must have gotten in through the tuner knob. My husband and I tried to unplug the unit this morning, but couldnt figure out what the previous owners did. They rigged it somehow. Guess it is to be expected buying such a fixer house.

Hi,
I believe getting liquid/moisture behind the 5 knobs caused my problem (4 for burners, 1 for oven). I had just moved into my home and the gas stove/oven was extremely dirty. I was giving the stove a good cleaning when the ticking started. I had taken the knobs off and was cleaning the face. I think I just got to much moisture on the knobs/ face. It clicked until it dried out. It probably clicked for at least a good 30 minutes or more. It did this a few times when I was cleaning. I didn't call a repair person out, so I can't speculate on whether there are any other problems that contributed to the clicking. My oven is very old too. Since then, it hasn't clicked (it doesn't start clicking on its own). To clean it, I try to just wipe it down with a damp rag (now the major cleaning is done). I haven't had any other issues and the 4 burners work well.
The gas company rep also said liquid behind the knobs causes the clicking. But just make sure you don't smell gas or it could be another more serious issue.
I don't have any mechanical / electrical / home appliance knowledge. I just followed the advice of the gas company rep and posters here. I let it be and watched it. If it didn't stop after a while, I would have reluctantly called a repair person.
Hope that helps a bit. Good luck.
