The reason is that your detergent has a fragrance, but the drying process forces air through the clothes to dry them, and takes out the fragrance. Personally, I prefer no smell at all, and am sensitive to odors and perfumes. That's one reason I use Fuller 86 detergent, it has no perfume added. If you really must have perfume in your clothing, use dryer sheets.
