When it states in a recipe that you need a "cup" of something or "1/2 cup" of something how much do they mean in grams or ounces? Or how big or small a cup do they mean?

Many thanks for your replies

A Cup in a recipe is an actual measuring cup, which equals 8 fl. ounces.   Naturally this means like water or milk, but works for oil, shortening, applesauce, etc.  by weight too.   However, it will NOT work by weight for non-fluid items like flour or sugar.

Tupperware has a great set of measuring cups:   http://sneakykitchen.com/kitchen/products/measuring_cup.htm

If you use the metric system, there are several recipe sites that carry conversion tables.  Here's one:  http://www.gumbopages.com/metric.html

People without measuing cups can use items found around the home;  an 8-ounce tomato sauce can, for instance, and a regular teaspoon is pretty close to a measuring spoon teaspoon.   I myself use a tomato paste can with both ends cut out as a biscuit cutter!  And a tuna fish can with both ends cut out as a form for makeral, salmon or Black Bean Patties.
