Sure takes me back to the "olden" days!  I graduated from Miami Jackson in 1958 and this sure has brought back some memories!  Some of these I had forgotten and it's great to bring them back.  Thanks a bunch!  Gammy

I am jumping in late compared to others but here is my allapattah neighborhood memories..  I was also born at Victoria Hospital in 1944.  Lived and ran around the allapattah area for many many years.  Went to Santa Clara elementary, Robert E. Lee Jr. High and Miami Jackson.  I remember the hobby shop, drug store, royal castle, bowling alley, etc.  Does anyone remember the cargo plane crash on 36th street?  How about Ralph Renick and Weaver the weather man?

Many of the "old-timers" hung out at the bar at the corner of 22nd Ave and 28th Street in the '70s and '80's; it used to be a sort of sports bar in the 60's.  Before that, the men hung out at a bar on the south-west side of that corner.

About 1915 some surveyor, probably hung over, surveyed that end of 28th St, and four blocks of 22 Court where we live, 2 or 3 feet north and east of where it should have been. People still get into fights over where their property lies. When the Feds did a mammoth project to upgrade streets, sidewalks, utilities, etc., they had to move the block of 28th St just west of 22 Ave several feet south to straighten it out to meet 28th across the street, and then they widened 22 Ave extensively, and moved 22nd Court and the alley behind it.  They left the rest; as a result the lots across the street are longer back to front, and the ones on the east side of 23 Ave shorter, and four blocks of 23 Ave itself is really spacious.

As a result of all this, the drugstore with the soda bar on the corner and the bar next door to it were torn down.  That left a lot more parking on the north side and that's where the old timers went to hang out.  I played a heck of a lot of pool at that place.  The "old-timers" sat on the east side of the horseshoe shaped bar, while those of other ethnic persuasion took over most of the rest of it by 1980. Weaver Jr. used to go there sometimes, and I'd see him at the grocery, too, but although fairly younger than my husband and I, he wasn't in good health at all, and I haven't seen him in a few years.  The bar converted into strictly a liquor store a few years back, and the pool halls, of which there were up to four sometimes around that corner, have all closed due to horridly restrictive City of Miami laws.

I just read your reply and am so excited to hear from someone that remembers that trailer park. If my memory is right it was called Palm Lake Trailer Park. I will check with my older brother and sisters about pictures, but I kind of doubt there are any. We lived in one of the cottages in the park and a small trailer with a Florida room my father built. There was a railroad track on the other side of the trailer park. There was a building near the entrance to the park that had rooms or apartments in it. Do you remember a man that had monkeys that lived there? He used to give us kids the dried fruit he fed the monkeys.

Our name is Armstrong. My older brother is Jimmy and my sisters Pam and Robbie. I remember walking to school in the first grade with my older siblings, but I don't remember the name of the school. I left during my first grade year to live with my grandparents in SC.

My mother worked for a barbeque restaurant called Plantation BBQ. There was more than one location in Miami. Do you remember the restaurant?

Thanks for you reply. I hope to hear from you again.

Are you talking about the plane that hit the paint and body shop?? That paint and body shop my brother worked there the day it hit my brother was layed off of work there he was a bodyman just picked his tools up before the plne struck and killed every one there. He was mad about getting laid off until we heard the news. By the way johnny and mac was always considered the largest paint and body sop in the world. When we had the largest on 27th ave. 5 city blocks long and over 60 employees we painted cars for 14.95 enamel we use to buy our paint for 1.00 a gallon dupont paint. On the corner of 79street and 27th ave. we use to hang out behind pix shoes at FUN LAND PARK i was born and raised in that area and 3 generations of my family our family moved from georgia to florida in mid 1800's and alot of my family still remain in miami. schools melrose, robert e. lee, hang out pizza palace, dairy queen on 36th street 27th ave, masters field and crome avenue drag racing, curtis pool, all back in the 60's. those were the great days for us even though we were very poor we invented fun. duke

I graduated from Miami Jackson in 1958 and haven't been back to that area in at least 40 years - and I plan to go by there at least one more time and reminisce.

My dad was killed in World War II on Nov. 20, 1944.  I don't remember others talking about the war or if others lost their dad in the war.

I now belong to an organization called AWON (American WWII Orphans Network)http://www.awon.org

If you know of anyone who served during WWII - on the homefront or overseas - please go to http://www.wwiimemorial.com  and click on "registry".  You can add the names to the memorial registry and help "Keep their memory alive"!

The World War II Memorial in Washington, DC  honors ALL who served - not just those who lost their lives.

I just found your forum.  I grew up around the Allapattah area.  I remember going to the Live and Let Live Drug store Many times.  Dr. Billy Rentz preformed surgery on me a couple of times.   We used to go to the library located behind the drug store every Sat.   The Kwik Chek is where we did our grocery shopping after Shell City became to dangerous to shop at.  Fredericks at Edison Center was another place we used to shop.  I used to get my gym shorts at the 5 & 10 located across the street from Jackson High.  My cousin graduated from here.  My wife and I did not know each other at the time but we both shopped in the area.  Orange blossom hobbies was my favorite place to go to spend my allowance.  I believe the western outfitters shop on 17 ave was later turned into a pet store.  I bought my first turtle there.  My first dentist was located across the street from Dr. Billy Rentz office.   Unfortunately, he died in a car crash.   I am not sure if he is the same one mentioned in this forum.   Does anyone remember a lumber supply store on 17 ave.   My brother and I are arguing if it was a Lindsley Lumber or a RV Martin Lumber.

I was born in Hialeah Hospital and lived most of my life two blocks away from Jackson Memorial Hospital.  11 st and 11 ave.   My future wife lived most of her life on 25 Ave and 34 St.        We both used fake addresses and went to Citrus Grove Jr High and then Miami Senior High School.   My wife attended Melrose Elem School while I went to Highland Park Elem.  I agree Allapattah area was a very nice quiet neighbor hood.  Unfortunately all things change,  and not all change is for the better.

Since I can't edit my post I will add on.       I too spent many hours at FunLand Park.  We used to collect bottle caps and turn them in for free tickets.  My Mom used to work at the Sears at NorthSide for a short period of time.  We would go pick her up at night and she would sometime bring home some white candies.  They looked like mothballs (but they weren't)  The outside was a rough white sugar hard surface and I don't remember what the center was like.

If you are referring to the lumber that was at perhaps 39th Street on 17th Ave., that was a Lindsley Lumber.  We shopped there often.  It was torn down when State Road 112 went through.  The only RV Martin is still there, at 17th Avenue and 28th Street, right on the corner.  We still shop at Martin's from time to time, although our usual Hardware for this and that is A & B Hardware at 28th Street and 27th Ave.

Hello mike I spent some of my earlier years & 1st-2nd grade school in allapattah. The reason I'm contacting you is because of your last name. When I was a young boy I had few friends and of those I had I remember Dart humeston was my first real friend and he had a older brother named mike. Mike was a friend of the familys for years. If your darts brother (hello from the past )If not please excuse the midnight ramblings.
