Barb,

there are two Royal Castle's left in Miami under private ownership, see;

http://groups.msn.com/millenniummadness/retro1.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=1752

Take a look at the site and pictures.  You will find some Miami stuff like WQAM

links and you may want to join MM.  If you have any RC photos we would like to

see them.

Not only is Burrs Farm still around but Bob Burr and his wife Robin do an annual tour of the Redlands farms including the new winery down there that makes wines from tropical fruits. It called Schnebly Redland's Winery and is a fun place to go on a weekend for a tour. As a kid my mom would take us strawberry and tomato picking down on those farms in the springtime. I also remember the Serpentarium very well, as my dad loved to take out of town visitors there with us when we were kids. It is no longer there. The owner Bill Haast and his wife Nancy have relocated to Punta Gorda Florida where they operate the Miami Serpentarium Laboratories. Bill is 90 years old and has survivied 168 venomous snake bites from snakes as deadly as the coral snake and the King cobra. I am still in awe of him as I used to watch him do his snake handling at the old place so many times and wonder how he could survive all those bites!

Hi!

My name is Debbie, and I was born in Mami in 1951.  I left in 1979 for New Mexico, but I remember some of the places you've mentioned.  My parents used to take my younger brother and I to Policeman's Park--although I couldn't tell you its exact location.  Do you recall a place called Storyland?  what started me on this search was the old Royal Castle Hamburger chain that served wonderful birch beer.

Anyway--e-mail if you'd like.

Was it perhaps Funland?    Storyland sound familiar but I never heard of it in Miami.

We live about 1 mile north of Policeman's park.  It's still in use.

Thanks for helping keep my childhood memories of Allapattah alive. I was born in 1942, and we lived at 1600 NW 33rd St.  We moved to AL in 1951. In an earlier post, I stated that my grandfather Bill Farris owned Live and Let Live Drug Store.  He died around '57 or '58.  The store had a post office and a soda fountain (which I loved). I remember the mounted police officer that patrolled the area.  There was also a Seminole Chief who seemed to always be around.  I think his name was Osceola, but I could be wrong on that.  You mentioned the dog track, and I went there sometimes with Grandaddy to watch the dogs train. I was fascinated by the "rabbit" on a stick going around the track.

I attended kindergarten at Allapattah Baptist Church, and Winifred Schekles was my teacher.  I went through 3rd grade at Santa Clara Elementary, and Olga Benson was the principal.

All the other places like Crandon Park, the Monkey Jungle, etc are dear to me. I just wish I could remember last week like I remember 50-60 yrs ago.:)

Thanks again for keeping these things alive in my mind.

I had heard about Mr. Farris, but we were customers at Live & Let Live Drug Store only since 1960 when we moved to Allapattah.  Right across the street was a Western Supply with clothes, saddles, and all sorts of Country-Western stuff, and in back an alley where the mounted policeman would leave his horse to rest while he grabbed lunch.  My late daughter Elizabeth who loved horses and all animals, always insisted that after our trip to the drug store, we go through the Western store to see if the horsie was out back so she could pet its nose.  Then we'd go to Royal Castle for burgers with little holes punched in them, at 10 cents each!

Back then, medications were delivered on request by the very congenial Mr. Jones, for a tip.  Many, many years later his wife, Corrie Jones, earned extra cash and got her own supplies wholesale as one of my Fuller Brush representatives, and her daughters are still customers.

My three children, Beth, Mark and Cathy, all attended the Lutheran kindergarten and pre-school for three years, taught by Mrs. Ford and Mrs. Jaros.  The Luthern church at 26th Street and 22nd Ave. changed hands a few times, and now is a Hispanic Seventh Day Adventist Church.

As far a memories go, I too remember back then so clearly.  Now if I could just remember where I put my keys...  and why I wanted them!  The problem with age is that one begins to suffer from butfirst syndrome.

Thanks for affirming the chief's name.  I remember clearly his colorful ruffled shirt that he always seemed to wear.

I went to Santa Clara Elementary, but we moved away from Miami in 1951.  Also, I was born in 1942, so I was gone before you were born!  We lived at 1600 NW 33rd ST.

I don't remember any of those family names.  My grandparents moved to Miami in 1924, and their last name was Farris.  He owned the Live and Let Live Drug Store.

I lived at 1244nw 32st and attended santa clara elementary in 1967. I also remember my father taking us to the royal castle to get some hamburgers, its a taste you will never forget. I sure got a lot of memories reading all of these postings. I am wondering if this house is still at that address above? I also remember the serpentarium with the statue of the big cobra on top of the building.

I don't know about your house, but the house I lived in at 1600 NW 33rd St was still there in 1973.  That's the last time I was in Miami.  Maybe some others might know.

I was born and raised in miami, Lived in allapatah a couple years. I do remember going past the surpentarium many times back in the late 60s and seeing that giant statue of a cobra on top of the building. I wonder if it is still there? I moved to georgia in 1988. I miss those good ole days.

I told you I was older!:)  It would be nice to know about some of the landmarks.  I attended Allapattah Baptist Church kindergarten.  You may have read in another post that my grandfather owned Live and Let Live Drug Store.  I wonder if it's still there? I think it was on 17th Ave.
