After rereading the whole section on Allapattah, the words JByron and Red Cross Drug store.......
If my memory is correct, Red Cross Drug store, faced on Flagler and extended all the way thru the block to 1st Street. Either in 1945 or 1946 the downtown store was destroyed by fire. Every thing in the store was shoveled into dump trucks that carried it to a landfill on 32nd Ave and around 55th Street, next to Gladeview grade school. So many people went there and digging in the piles of stuff to salvage items the police finally had to send patrol cars there to keep folks away, as they were creating traffic problems as well as problems for the land fill. I recall only one visit to the store when I was around 7 or 8 years old - (1941-42) and seeing a roulette wheel and other gaming items that could be purchased. One other observation, several posters have called the Regent Theater, (next to Live and Let Live Drugs) the Dade theater. The Dade theater was on the north side of 36th Street next to the drugstore on the corner of 17th Ave. and 36th Street. It was reported here in the forum that the theater and Live and Let Live Drug were demolished. My understanding was it was placed on the national preservation list and had been restored . Shore would like a conformation on this......

I remember hearing about that fire, but we didn't live here then. I'll bet there's lots of people that do remember it now.
Live and Let Live got really old and shabby. It was one of those old stucco buildings that had semi-modernized, but the wide pine floorboards inside (which contributed to the total destruction of the five & dime in '69) would creak alarmingly when you walked on them. While they had modernized the doors, windows and fixtures, and the ceiling was supported by pillars, it was still a very old, decrepit building. Things got pretty bad in Allapattah including the crime rate, civil disturbances and riots, the influx from Mariel which included many criminals and mentally unstable persons which Castro got rid of, gang wars and holdups. From the late '60's until the early '80s, well over a decade of unrest led to many Allapattah die-hards to throw in the towel and move out. Businesses left as well, whether burned out, robbed repeatedly, afraid for their employees safety or just losing business. Many closed early or otherwise cut back hours.
We had an "interesting" experience at Live and Let Live in the late '60s. As a result of the unrest, they had purchase a trained guard dog, a HUGE German Shepherd, probably the best choice at the time as anyone could have just hacked a hole in the old roof or walls and today's sophisticated alarm systems didn't exist. One evening we arrived just after closing and when we tried the glass door, the dog attacked with such ferocity it left saliva all over the inside of the glass. On another evening, we went to fill a prescription for a sick child very late. While waiting we wandered to mid-store, where Floyd leaned against a pillar while I squatted down at a low record rack to see if there was anything I couldn't live without. Another employee, nervously deciding to close a few minutes early and not hearing or seeing anyone in the store, let the dog loose. He made a beeline for us, skidded to a stop and started smelling me all over. When the pharmacist called us and didn't get an answer, he realized the dog was out and panicked. They found us holding perfectly still while the dog humped my shoulder; we had a female spaniel in season and that was probably all that saved us from getting shredded.
Dade Theater was already ancient history when we moved in here in 1960, I'm quite sure. Regent was torn down not too many years later, and the lot stood vacant for years. Live and Let Live couldn't be salvaged, and while there was some talk of putting it on a restoration list, that just wasn't feasible, and a new modern building was built, with a big Medical Center, the Northwest Medical Group (MCCI) on the theater site and I believe on the second floor of Live and Let Live as well.

My feet can still feel how it felt to walk on those old wood floors at the Live and Let Live (we always weighed ourselves on their scales.) I also remember the ten-cent toys at the Five and Ten...that's where we headed as soon as we had any pocket change. Another vivid memory is shopping the fire sale...the smell of charred wood, little or no lights, but we thought we'd find a bargain. (I think my mom bought me something to embroider.)
Remember Kings Cream on the SW corner of 36th and 17th? We'd get the tropical flavors of ice cream...Guanabana and Mamey were my favorites. Oh and the bakery in earlier days! The cream puffs were my favorites.
My mom worked for a short time at Bill and Bonnie Rosses "tasty freeze"...actually, my youngest daughter is named Bonnie...partly after that wonderful woman.
My mom spent her later years at Epworth Village, a retirement home in Hialeah, and Bonnie and Bill were also there. Actually, there were quite a few of the old Allapattah residents that lived there. Some are still with us...others are remembered fondly.

Sorry, I lived at 1311 N.W. 40th Street.
However I have lots of relatives and one of them may have live where you ask. what was the time frame, maybe I can narrow it down. I had an uncle and aunt that were caretakers a Shadowlawn school for years.

I saw on google earth the other day that Ross's Dairy is gone and a high rise now sits on that block....and that the parking lot on the alley between 35th and 36th where live and let live drug was has been paved......my grandmothers house behind the stores on 36th is gone and two square buildings are on that lot now.......I see moore park on 36th and 7th ave is still there, but with all the new highways a lot of the old neighbor hoods are gone...
I read the other day that the old buildings of Jackson High will be razed and a new building put up in its place........sad sad sad, I still recall when the old square moorish design schoo was there before any wings were added........like in 1938...I was 5 years old then.......lol......

Heck, Marvin, the paving lot was paved over a couple of generations ago. Back in about '69 or so, 36 Street really got built up nicely. There was a K-Mart or some such just west of where the Western Union was, and another supermarket somewhere around there. All the stores were doing really well, and the cafeteria at the corner of 18 Ave and 36 was packed all the time. Someone set fire to the 5 & 10 on night, they blamed it on the Weathermen Underground but nothing was ever proven, and it spread pretty much throughout the whole block except for the ends. Jackson Byron pulled out, etc. as well as most of those small businesses around there. The theaters had long since gone; in subsequent few years 36 St. was trashed repeatedly through 1980 when the whole street was practically destroyed. At that point everyone with any brains pulled out. Orange Blossom Hobbies moved almost down to 22 Ave. Most business oweners were getting along in years anyway and were only too glad to retire, especially with the increasing language problem (thank God, I'm bilingual). At some point after the five and dime burned down, the library was built on the NE corner of 18 Ave and 35 st, and the entire middle of that block down to 35 St was paved for a parking lot. Kwik Chek, now Winn Dixie went downhill too, and finally they built a new one at 17 Ave behind the old one, and pulled the old one down. The post office moved just west of 17th Ave on 28th St, across from where the driving range used to be. That is now Dominican Park. Exotic Gardens is gone too. The population has grown so much that Jackson no longer holds all the students, and the building was been added on to all that can be, and the core is deteriorating. So there's no way they can fix it, although Miami High on Flagler is a historic building or something and has been repaired and conserved.
The cost of housing, partly due to extreme raise in cost of materials and land getting scarce, and the cost of insurance which is astronomical, and taxes, is so great most poeple now are looking at renting an apartment or buying a condo, and it seems a new condo is started almost every day somewhere in Miami. My house on 22nd Court was built in 1919/1920, and of course we have improved and remodeled it, but it's still grandfathered in for taxes, and paid for, otherwise I'd not have a private home here or ever, I expect. Even so, I pay in insurance per year almost one third of what I paid for the house in 1965!!!
More and more of our customers and friends and reps are moving up to Georgia; just wait, the whole state of Georgia will go condo too if this continues.
