I am trying to remember the exact location of a small cluster of wooden rental units which I think was called the Acre of Diamonds. I believe the Acre of Diamonds was located south of the Allapattah 5 $ 10. As I recall, there were numerous signs on the property on which biblical passages were inscribed. This was way back in 1963. Does anyone remember this place?

When were first came here in 1960, at least some of those cottages were still there. On the corner facing 18th Ave and perhaps 30th St or 31st there was a hand with one finger pointing skyward with some Biblical exhortation on it. They have long since disappeared. I don't remember the actual cottages, mostly the finger. Perhaps the other cottages and signs were gone by then.

Bess,

This is an outstanding website, and I am enjoying it very much. I am turning 50 this year, and I am finding myself reliving some great times through this forum. What a great idea this was, I am elated that I found it.

The finger you speak of was to the east of the Allapattah YMCA when it was on 28th Street. I remember that finger, as kids we always thought it was funny. I don't remember ever reading the inscription, so I can't tell you what was written on it. The finger was located in a very nice neighborhood. The houses around there were nice single family homes, I don't remember cottages. Today you have those 3 round buidlings there, which are section 8 housing for the elderly. I was at that Y from 1967 to 72, so I was one of those who went through the move from 28th Street to the current 17th avenue location.

I haven't visited that area in quite sometime.

BTW, did you know that there was a Greek Orthodox Church that was built on NW 15 avenue and 25th or 26th streets? A Greek Orthodox priest lived there with his wife, initially they held services in their home, then later built an actual church. The church was finished in the early 70s, so it was pretty new when I moved from the area. 3 years ago I went by the ole neighborhood, and much to my surprise it was gone. The building is there, but it is no longer a church.

This church was very close to a HUGE home that was located off 15th and about the same 25 or 26th street.  That huge home is still there, the difference is there are some 18 wheelers parked in that huge yard. I always wondered who built that home, it was certainly large, and totally out of place when compared to the rest of the homes surrounding it. At Halloween time we used to go by there, but there was no one ever there, come to think of it, I don't remember ever seeing any cars there or people, but given the condition of the landscaping, someone had to live there. As kids we spent so much time in school, that we probably missed the folks who lived there!

I hope you can shed some light on this home and perhaps the Greek Othrodox Church. It is very unique. I am sure someone will remember these landmarks and perhaps the history behind them. I remember a lot about our community, but I don't have pictures, and that hurts.  I wish I had pics of some of the landmarks and the times we spent at Orange Blossom, the Y, and on 36th Street.

Best Regards To All,

Louis

How well I remember that finger.   My daughter would often mutter "wrong finger".  I don't think the message got across to most people.

Speaking of old places, does anyone remember the sunken garden on 22nd Ave perhaps at 32 or 33 St, on the east side?  A Japanese couple bought a house on a double lot, and excavated the empty corner lot to make a huge sunken garden.

I don't remember that large house, but there was another on 22 Ave just north of 28th St, a veritable mansion, with a fountain and lily pond, a cupola, balconies, and all the trimmings, Spanish style.  It took up half the block.  It was surrounded by trees and a fence so most people didn't even know it was there.  I often thought it would be so great to live there.  No one knew who lived there, but someone did.  It was divided up into two or three apts. in recent years, and a couple years ago the downstairs tenant left a pan on the stove and the whole place burned down.  An apartment building is now being built there.

I grew up in that area I live at 3703 NW 22 CT from 1966 - 1974 I have many memories of the place, the YMCA we would sneak in at night to use the pool, The hobby shop racing the slot cars. Across the street behind the church was Boy Scout Troop 461, eating at the Royal Castle @ 17th ave & 36st, The bowlling alley at 36st & 27th ave I went to Melrose Elementry 1963 - 1967 , Robert E. Lee Jr High 1967 - 1970 which sadly was torn down and were I spent the best days of my boyhood. never went to Jackson I was able to transfer to Miami High (my girlfriend went there). My friends and I would go to the train tracks at nw 23st and jump on slow moving trains I remember the bridge on 22th ave where one would watch for boats as we would jump into the Miami River. Dancing at The Hungerian club off of 22th ave. Growing up could have not been better, I still have a couple of childhood friends living in the area.
