I lived in Allapattah as a child.. went to Earlington Heights Elem, Allapattah Middle... Miami Jackson then called Andrew Jackson, hung out at Ross's Ice Cream Shop... that was across the street from Jackson.. remember the old drug store Live and Let Live, and the old Royal Theater. If memory is correct.. the first shopping center in Miami was 103rd Shopping Center.. thank you so much for the ride down memory lane.

Colette,

I remember the area well, but where was this Royal Theatre? The only theatre that I am aware of was The Strand on NW 7th Avenue, which is technically Wynwood. I don't remember a theatre in Allapatah.

There were two theatres in Allapattah.   When we moved here in 1960, one had already bit the dust, but people talked about it, and I had the impression that it was on the north side of NW 36 St, across from Jackson.  Does anyone remember?

The other was beside Live and Let Live Drug Store on the northwest corner of 17th Ave and 35th Street.  My kids spent many a weekend there.  With television becoming so popular, however, and the theatre aging, it too was torn down, and I think that the new Live and Let Live is now on that site.

Where was the New Regency Theatre? I belong to a website, Cinema Treasures which highlights movie houses, old and new. We are always looking to update the list. The theatres mentioned in this thread are nowhere to be found in CinemaTreasures.org I would like to put them there. I am sure, that like me, there are many that were not aware of these old movie houses which disappeared before we were old enough to visit them.

All information on these is very much appreciated. Addresses or approximate locations would be ideal.

Thanks to all of you!

Definitety not!   Orange Blossom used to be to the west of Jackson High; I understand the older theatre was to the east, but it was gone when we came; on the NE corner of 17th Ave and 36 St was a Rexall Drug Store, but it too closed shortly after 1960.  I really don't know its exact location.  The other cinema was definitely on the north-west corner of 35th St and 17 Ave, facing the avenue, as we dropped my oldest daughter and her friends there many times on Saturday mornings.

Many of you may remember the small YMCA that was between Comstock Elementary and 17th Ave.   It was later built at 18th Ave and 28th Street, on the northwest side, and the fields went back to the Seventh Day Adventist Academy on 30th St.  Later a larger building was built.  It just came down.  A huge apartment high rise is planned, with the YMCA incorporated in the building.  Frankly it is one of the ugliest buildings I've seen in a while, according to artists' rendering.

Bess,

Great to get your input as always. Do you happen to remember the name of the theatre that was on 35th?

I remember the theatre as the Regents Theatre. Saturdays as a kid that was the best place to be! I went to Earlington Heights Elem, Allapattah Middle , then in 1961 sadly left the Allapattah area. I'm 60 yrs old now and still think of the wonderful times that I had back then. Carol
