Hi! I just found your website and am so excited! I'm working with an after-school program at Allapattah Middle School, and we're doing a project with the kids about the history of Allapattah. We've received some money to produce a mosaic mural to be mounted on the outside of the school, and we've been looking for resources to find out more about the history. I think I stumbled onto the best.

I've copied information from your site to share with the kids... will give you the credit, of course! Thanks for this wonderful website.

When we first moved to this area, there were private kindergartens, elementary schools, and junior and senior high schools. Allapattah extended far north of the present boundary, and that is where Allapattah Elementary (and now Allapattah Middle) are located. When the elevated State Rd. 112 came through just north of NW 38 Street, it divided the community. Many people are still confused as to which community they lived in or still live in. The same goes for Melrose and Allapattah. Except for a gerrymander extension along NW 36 St, out to the airport, the area west of 27th Avenue was county, and east was city. Melrose persisted in Allapattah, however, re "Melrose Park" at 32nd St., and Melrose nursery, a veritable jungle four blocks square at 27th Avenue and 28th Street, now moved to northern Hialeah. After a false start where a Sears store was considered, a lower-income housing project was built on the site.

This city/county division also made the west side a haven for bars and liquor stores, since they had to close at 1 AM in the City of Miami, but could stay open almost around the clock in the county. This includes the famous late Screwball Bar where I learned to play pool, but that's another story. If anyone has a picture of that neon sign, please send me a copy.

As far as Allapattah Elementary, Middle School and Jr. High, they may not be technically located in Allapattah anymore, but their heart and history is obviously still with us.

Connie,

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help the school achieve the mural.  I am always looking for community projects to help out with.  I think the kids really need to learn about Allapattah and what a great community it is. Please feel free to email me.
