I happened to trip upon your website by accident two hours ago, and I have spent most of the afternoon dodging my boss to read more information about the history of Allapattah.

I was born and raised in Allapattah, and I am interested in beginning a Homeowners Association. I live near Miami Jackson Hospital.

I would also like to receive update posting of your newsletter if you do have one.

Excuse the delay - our best friend in Miami, Ella Abbott, also a Fuller Brush rep with a considerable business at the Hollywood Dog Track Flea Market - just passed away after several difficult months of illness the day before I received your letter.

You want my opinion? A homeowner's association is an impossibility here in Allapattah.  There's two many factions - too many problems and ideas on how to fix them - or wishes to let sleeping dogs lie.

The last person who headed something similar - who by the force of his personality, his vision, intelligence, persistence and energy, and knowledge of how things worked - was Orlando Urra, unfortunately cut down at far too young an age by cancer in the 1980's. Since then it's been status quo. Everyone wants something different, nobody wants to pay for anything, and the City of Miami still has not recovered from decades of being a hotbed of mismanagement and corruption.

The City has an Allapattah Community Center, at 2257 N.W. River Drive, telephone (305) 633-0466, where hearings are regularly held on various matters. Having seen various community associations fail for many reasons, I think the best bet any resident of Miami has is to attend these meetings, as well as any City Commission or Zoning meetings where issues involving Allapattah are concerned. These meetings and subjects for discussion are announced in the Miami Herald.   I think any effort to form a homeowners association that includes all factions in Allapattah is bound to fail - admittedly my personal opinion. I could be wrong.

Thank you for posting this. Just a little correction, Mr. Urra actually passed away in the mid1990's. On another note, it would be nice to work towards an association in the Allapattah Area but it will take much time to get there. There are many who are working hard to clean up the area and much has been done but there's still a long way to go. Its a work in progress.
