I was so excited to stumble across this forum!  Couldn't read fast enough!  My grandparents settled in Miami in 1926, and my parents built next door, where I was born (1957) and raised, till we fled south in 1971.  The best years of my life were spent in that wonderful melting pot.  It's amazing to see my memories echoed in your posts...Shell's, Live and Let Live, Dr. Conger, Billy Rentz...I think I may be a little younger than most on the forum, but my brothers all went to Jackson in the 60's...I left after Robert E. Lee- and think it was the wrong move!  Life was good even in the rough times.

My father was a mailman, his route was bordered by 29th St. to the railroad tracks, between 12th and 17th avenues.  Everyone knew him as Oscar-

We attended Allapattah Methodist Church

We lived at 1451 n.w. 31st st.  The house my dad built is still there.  I am a traveling RN Caseworker, and have had several opportunities to drive through the neighborhood- as I said, a huge part of my heart is still there.

It's been almost 2 yrs since you posted, but I hope you are still visiting the forum. I only recently dicovered it. I was born in Miami -(Jackson Memorial) in 1942.  We lived at 1600 NW 33rd St., and moved to AL in 1951. I went to kindergarten at Allapattah Baptist, and through 3rd grade at Santa Clara Elem. My grandfather owned Live and Let Live.  Dr Rentz was our doctor, and I remember Dr Conger.  Do you remember Sid Callahan, a dentist?   Like you, I still have sand in my shoes and salt water in my veins.

I certainly remember the screwball bar, where I learned to play pool, often until 2 or 3 AM.  Sometimes they had a live band but their heydey was past at that point.   Wish I had a picture of that neon sign.

Sid, Jr. (right?)

I'm Danna, daughter of Evelyn and Woody Hamilton ( both deceased), and grandaughter of Bill (Live and Let Live Drugs) and Eva Farris.  I've written about some of my childhood memories, and the Callahans figure in one segment.  I remember listening to soap operas with Momma Ada, and playing with Lynn the dog.  I have a picture of me as a little girl in a pool with your Aunt Bep.  I had such a crush on you, and I even have a portrait of you that my mother had.  I'm 65 now, and I have 3 children and 4 grandchildren.  I have lived in Montgomery, AL for almost 30 yrs.  I'm so glad to hear from you, and please be in touch.  The memories excerpt I referred to is on this forum under Allapattah Childhood in the Forties.
