Hi all. I'm new to this group. Found it by accident, but having been born in Miami and living here my whole life, I found reading the posts very interesting and fun.
The other night, my husband and I were driving home from an appointment up near the Golden Glades and we passed a Royal Castle!!! It still had the original paint job and we could see the interior was orange. Wow! I thought they were all gone. It's not in a great part of town (79th St. & 27th Ave.) but so cool that there's still one around. There used to be one near my home when I was growing up on Sunset and Galloway. My Dad said they would hire released prisoners to work there. Anyone know if that's really true?
It amazes me that with all the development, there are still a few places here that seem to be holding out...Monkey Jungle is a big one. The rest, like Coral Castle and Venetian Pool, will always remain since they are historic places. At least I hope they'll remain!
I remember so many little things all the time...Jackson Byrons, Richard's, Grand Union, Sunset Corners, etc. I'm not that old, but the changes I've seen in my life amaze me. I wish Miami could go back to the old days...My grandfather and his brothers used to own lumber stores here (Renuart), but the business merged and ended up dying out. In the 80's, my parents built a house in Key Largo and my mom was shocked to find that there was an RBC lumberyard in the Keys! Of course, it's gone now... but it was neat to see.
LOL, I was born in Tallahassee and raised in Miami. The Royal Castle by my house (S.W. 8th & 67th Av. ) was where you'd always find my 8 brothers and myself. I'd like to have a buck for each and every burger we wolfed down there.
They did not hire relased prisoners to work there...Well, not knowingly .
I miss R.C.
Frozen "Krystal/White Castle " burgers just 'ain't da same
I miss cruising down to the Keys to Maries for Key Lime Pie and smoked kingfish too. Waaah!
