Thank you for alerting me to the story. I enjoy your writings. I was looking back at some other Allapattah memories, and I remember Fun Park very well and have ridden the "Wild Mouse". The fun park was on 27th Avenue on the way to the mall, not far north of that. I spent many a Friday night date at that place. The Wild Mouse was a wild ride. I also remember a tragedy on the Wild Mouse, a car instead of making the very sharp turn left the track and went off the frame. I cannot remember if there was a death involved but it closed the ride down. I don't know if it ever reopened (the ride that is) but I knew that I wouldn't ride it anymore. I came to Miami last February to take a cruise. We asked the Taxi driver to take us from the Airport down 36th Street to get to downtown. We wanted to see how things had changed. We were amazed to see the Orange Blossom Hobby Shop still in the same building it had been in all those years ago. I spent many Saturdays in there with my father and brother. There was also a bowling alley just off 27th Avenue and 36th Street. It was called Paradise Bowl. That is where I took lessons and got my first bowling trophy. It was also a great place that teen's went for a Saturday night date. It later became a church. I saw the building was still there and I believe it was still a church. Ross's at the corner of 18th Avenue and 36th Street should also get mentioned if you haven't already. Bill Ross was the man's name and he was a great friend to all the Jackson High students. Much like Al's.

In actuality that isn't the same building. Orange Blossom rebuilt very close to the original site, a much larger place. Many Allapattah residents were very pleased that Orange Blossom elected to stay and rebuild after the riots and other problems, and apparently they are so unique that they are still doing well, being centrally located in Dade County. I wish more major businesses would do the same. With sufficient parking and security, I think they'd be surprised at the amount of residents and commuters that would shop here. Sears was going to build at the old Melrose Nursery site at 27th Avenue and 28th St., but something went haywire and they either backed out or failed to get city permission, and the famous Melrose jungle was cut back so lower income housing could be built.

WOW! Bill Ross and his lovely wife were members of my Church, Allapattah United Methodist and it was directly across from the Orange Blossom Hobby Shop. He was a fine, fine man and always provided the meat for our Wednesday night dinners at church!
