Unless you're an experienced salesperson, you may feel a little shy about starting right out approaching people about Fuller and Stanley products, or perhaps you don't know how to go about it. You may worry that you'll get the "cold shoulder" or freeze up. There's an easy way to take a test run, and earn while you're doing it. Practice on your relatives, friends and neighbors. Make a list of everyone you are close to or feel comfortable with. Just call each one to say that you just started with Fuller Brush (which also offers Stanley Home Products) and you are a little hesitant about getting started. Ask when would be a convenient time for you to go see them, please, "just to practice" before you go out to take orders from mere acquaintances, casual contacts or complete strangers. Most people will be more than happy to help you out, and in the process you'll find which ones have used the products before (and add them to your customer records) and take some orders. You'll then feel much more confident approaching others you know less well. Now the good news! Many shy people and introverts, even those with social phobias, work as salespersons. Why? It helps them be more outgoing and they learn to interact with others. After all, you probably can't just walk up to a stranger or an unknown neighbor and announce "Hey, I'd like to get to know you." Hmmm... But you CAN approach people and say "Hi, I'm the new Fuller Brush and Stanley distributor in the area. Can I show you (or loan you) a catalog? Have you ever used our products before? Did your mother or grandmother use Fuller or Stanley Home Products?" At the same time, many reps give a free gift of a handy brush, comb, spatula or one of the other inexpensive items Fuller offers to help break the ice. People will be so interested in the gift and the catalog, and perhaps thinking about products they have used before or need to buy, that they won't be concentrating on you, anyway. Before long you'll make new friends while you're making money! Bess W. Metcalf
