You can do it too.... Now you can make the money you need for vacation, home repairs, or whatever shortfall is coming up. You can do it. I've seen too many other people do it when motivated. In 1981 my daughter Cathy was just finishing high school. Cathy isn't a salesperson by nature, but she liked to talk in both Spanish and English, and has heard me sell on the phone for years. She had been taking Spanish as dual enrollment at our local junior college, since she didn't fit into the high school class, especially since the teacher insisted on trying to teach Castilian (from Spain) instead of New World Spanish such as is spoken-- and mangled-- here in Miami. In April the teacher announced a summer student exchange program with the University of Tlaxcala in high central Mexico. It would include a stop in Mexico City and a visit to the Yucatan peninsula and the Mayan ruins. Cathy greatly wanted to go, but the air fare was expensive and it just wasn't in our budget at the time. Cathy wasn't pleased. I finally suggested that she sell Fuller products to earn enough to pay her way. I gave her customer records and call slips that included many of our own customers as well as many from reps who were no longer with us. Every day after school, Cathy retired to her room, and made calls - an hour in the afternoon, an hour in the evening. Floyd and her brother Mark made the deliveries, taking a small slice of the commission to pay for gas; Cathy made many of the close-in deliveries herself with a friend along for company and security. By the end of May, she had her air fare and spending money. I don't recall the amount, but it was well over $1000. Her visit to Mexico and her stay in Tlaxcala were memorable experiences that greatly expanded her knowledge and enriched her life. We have some other reps who pop in and out for years, whenever they have a financial need that won't fit into their budget. I do it regularly to pay for emergencies such as an unexpectedly broken water heater or car problem, a shortfall in cash laid aside for property taxes, or some other budget inconvenience. You don't have to be a born salesperson to do it, either, or have the accumulated records that I now have on file. Just have persistence. My husband learned to be a good Fuller Brush manager and recruiter, and most never knew that he wasn't a salesperson by nature or inclination. He barely speaks except when explaining things. But he can take a Fuller Brush Electrostatic carpet sweeper, catalogs and some giveaways such as the handy brushes, visit businesses, and take enough orders for use in the business or for the owner/manager/employees' personal use, to make $10 to $18 an hour in commissions, even though his approach is feeble enough he gets asked to leave at eight out of ten businesses. He just goes on to the next one. Imagine what good salespeople can do! Fuller, and your own efforts, can make a difference in your life, your budget and your financial comfort level. Bess W. Metcalf
